4 must-have features for new cars

New cars continually raise the bar of what is expected as standard features, with even the cheapest models in the country expected to offer

We round up the four must-have features we think every new car on the market should have.

Bluetooth

There are few things more irritating than a loose cable flailing around the cabin of your car with every corner and change in speed – the simplest solution to this being Bluetooth.

No need for fancy smartphone mirroring apps that can read your Whatsapp aloud or project Waze onto a big screen, a simple wireless connection that allows the driver to play music or accept and reject calls without their attention being taken away from the road will suffice.

Cruise control

Cruise control takes much-needed pressure off the driver, especially on longer roads, and it can even lower a vehicle’s fuel consumption if used correctly.

While not many, there are still a handful of new entry-level cars on the market that do not come with this handy and well-known feature which may as well be considered as all but a crime.

LED lights

Halogen headlights should long have been a thing of the past and replaced with LEDs on every car.

LEDs shed a much brighter light that oftentimes shines much further, highlighting potential imperfections on the road far better and increasing the safety factor at night.

This technology has also been on the market for a considerable amount of time which has brought down the average price of an LED bulb significantly meaning it doesn’t have to be in the domain of pricier autos anymore.

Key fob window operation

Central locking is convenient but making this feature better on many high-end cars is the ability to also raise and lower all the windows without starting the car – either by tapping or holding a certain button on the key.

Being able to open the windows on a hot day or close them when clouds start rolling over without having to walk all the way to the car is one of the little pleasures in life and we think this should be mandatory on every vehicle with automatic windows and a keyfob.
