Best-selling cars in South Africa in 2022

The Toyota Hilux was the best-selling car in South Africa for the first 11 months of 2022.

While the official sales data for the final month of December will only be revealed in the new year, the bakkie’s lead over other vehicles is so large that it’s all but certain to seal the deal as the country’s best-selling car of 2022.

This is thanks to a whopping 29,647 Hilux models sold between January and November – a lead of more than 10,000 units over the second most-popular car in the country.

That honour goes to the VW Polo Vivo, which achieved a still incredible 19,445 sales as of November, making it the favoured model in the German automaker’s catalogue by a significant margin.

Third place, meanwhile, went to the Toyota Urban Cruiser – the brand’s most affordable crossover – with 16,047 units finding new homes so far this year.

In an incredibly close and heated battle for the title of the second-most-popular bakkie in South Africa, the Isuzu D-Max ultimately managed to pull ahead with 15,879 units compared to the Ford Ranger’s 15,847, though this is a result that has a very good chance of being flipped once December’s sales are in, given that the highly anticipated next-generation Ranger only just went on sale.

Other models to make it into the top 10 include the Suzuki Swift, VW Polo, Nissan NP200, Toyota Starlet, and Toyota Corolla Cross, all of which managed to get over 11,000 sales in the first 11 months of 2022.
