The Toyota Hilux not only took the crown for South Africa’s most popular bakkie in 2022, but also for being the best-selling vehicle in the country with a total of 29,647 models finding new owners between January and November.
In second place with nearly half the amount of sales as the Hilux is the Isuzu D-Max, which still managed to move a respectable 15,879 units.
Narrowly behind the Isuzu is the Ford Ranger at a total of 15,847 units, with November being one of the last months that the previous-generation model was sold as the new one launched in early December.
The only compact bakkie in the country, the Nissan NP200 grabbed the fourth spot with an achievement of 12,141 sales, with the affordable Mahindra Pik Up claiming fifth with 7,586 units moved.
Following this is another Nissan, the Navara, with 5,711 examples rolling out of dealers’ doors, and then the two GWM siblings, the Steed with 4,243 sales, and P Series with 3,891.
Sliding in at the tenth place for South Africa’s favourite bakkies in 2022 is the VW Amarok at 1,781 units, which will soon also be replaced by a new generation.

It’s worth noting that the dip in the Hilux’s performance between April and July can largely be attributed to flooding that put its Durban-based Prospecton plant out of operation for nearly three months.
