Best-selling cars in South Africa

December and 2022’s best-selling vehicle in South Africa was none other than the Toyota Hilux, raking in 2,556 sales during the last month and 32,203 sales over the course of the entire year, per Naamsa’s new-vehicle sales reports.

Toyota-badged cars also accounted for six out of the top 20 most-popular autos in December, as well as around one in four of every vehicle sold in the past 12 months.

Behind the Japanese manufacturer, VW was the second-favourite choice for local car buyers, with the Polo, Polo Vivo, and T-Cross all finding their own spots among last month’s best-selling vehicles.

Another standout from December’s top performers was the all-new Ford Ranger, which went on sale early in the month and managed to score a fourth place on the sales charts.

As usual, bakkies were a popular choice for consumers with the Isuzu D-Max and Nissan NP200 also featuring on the list at seventh and 16th place, respectively.

Hatchbacks, too, were responsible for scooping up six out of the top 20 positions, however, outshining all the other body styles were crossovers and SUVs, walking away with nine spots. The remaining opening was then taken up by the most-popular MPV in the country, the Toyota Hiace.
