Every electric car on sale in South Africa at the start of 2023

Electric cars are slowly but surely becoming a more common sight on the roads in South Africa, and this is no doubt thanks to the introduction of several new models in recent years.

Last year in particular was a big success for EVs, as South Africa received a plethora of new choices from brands including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz collectively bringing out over a dozen battery-powered cars.

Unfortunately, we also lost one of the more affordable EVs on the market last year when BMW made the decision to end production of the i3 hatchback.

This means there is currently only a single wall-fed car on the market for less than R1 million, namely the Mini Cooper SE with its asking price of R742,000, making EVs a form of transport that is still out of reach for many South Africans.

Even so, other models have seen enormous interest, such as the Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge, which sold out in less than 24 hours after being made available for purchase on the automaker’s website despite its R1,075,000 price tag.

As the world continues to make the shift towards clean transportation, it seems a safe bet that electric cars will continue to grow their market share here on the tip of Africa.
