Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

It’s been a good start to the year for South Africa’s carmakers, with this January marking a 4.8% increase in sales over the same month last year.

Much of these sales can once again be attributed to the country’s favourite vehicle segment, as a number of bakkies continue to feature in the top 10 best-sellers list every month.

Once again, the Toyota Hilux took the number one spot not just as South Africa’s favourite 4×4 but as its best-selling vehicle overall with 2,769 units purchased – thus beating the second and third best-selling bakkies combined.

These high riders happen to be the Isuzu D-Max and Ford Ranger, which managed a respective 1,273 and 1,269 sales. The D-Max and Ranger seems to be at each other’s throats every month, constantly trading places between third and second.

The strong sales numbers also suggest that Ford’s next-generation Ranger has been a hit with local consumers following its launch late last year, which also bodes well for the release of its half-sibling, the new Amarok, which is scheduled to debut later in 2023.

Moving on, the Nissan NP200 continues to dominate the affordable commercial vehicle market, taking fourth place with over 800 units shipped over the course of January.

Fifth place, meanwhile, went to Mahindra’s Pik Up line, which also saw over 800 people taking home a new vehicle last month.

Other top picks included the Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota Land Cruiser, and GWM’s two bakkie offerings with the P-Series and Steed 5.
