South Africa will soon be receiving a new affordable hatchback in the form of the updated Hyundai Grand i10.
Hyundai South Africa confirmed to TopAuto that it will be launching the new Grand i10 later in 2023, though the exact date was not provided.
What to expect
Few details have been shared about the upgraded hatchback thus far, but Hyundai has stated that the South African model will be sourced from India.
This means the Grand i10 will not be based on the new i10 that’s coming to Europe in 2024, which is manufactured in Türkiye. Instead, it’s likely that the facelifted South African Grand i10 will be similar to the Grand i10 Nio that recently launched in India.
The Nio is available with two different 1.2-litre engines – one with 50kW and 95Nm, and another with 61kW and 114Nm. The latter’s output is the same as the 1.2-litre currently found on the South African Grand i10, though here the i10 is also sold with a 1.0-litre powerplant with 49kW and 94Nm.
It’s a similar story with the gearbox, as both Indian and South African models can be had with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
Aesthetically, the Nio differentiates itself from the local Grand i10 with a black grille, LED daytime running lights, automatic projector headlamps, chrome door handles, 15-inch alloy wheels, and a new reverse light bar.
Its spec sheet offers a USB port, wireless charger, cruise control, voice commands, a multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry and start, stop-start, dual-tone interior, fabric seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, hill assist, a reverse camera, rear park sensors, and an 8-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Hyundai Grand i10 in South Africa
With a starting price of R214,900, the Grand i10 is the cheapest model in Hyundai South Africa’s catalogue.
This title was previously held by the Atos, but this is being discontinued in 2023 leaving the i10 as the new entry-level model in the Hyundai family.
The company has not said when the new i10 will go on sale in South Africa, so it remains to be seen how much of a price difference the facelifted model will have over its predecessor.
The manufacturer also has plans to update the i20 and i30 N hatchbacks, but said that South Africa would not receive these models for at least another year.
