March was the best month for new-vehicle sales in South Africa in 2023 thus far, with no model being quite as popular as the Toyota Hilux which moved 3,920 units.
In fact, Toyota didn’t just grab first place, but also fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, and 18th; these vehicles altogether accounting for over 21% of the total of 50,157 new vehicles sold in the country last month.
As usual, second and third place was hotly contested by two more bakkies, the Isuzu D-Max and Ford Ranger, with the Isuzu this time around sitting on top boasting 2,289 sales compared to the Ford’s 2,247.
The budget-friendly VW Polo Vivo took home the fourth position, followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross, Hiace, and Fortuner – the latter of which recently underwent an extensive facelift which undoubtedly played a part in its rising sales figures.
Another bakkie, Nissan’s compact NP200, made away with eighth place, whereas another Toyota, the Starlet, took ninth.
While it saw somewhat of a dip in popularity, the Suzuki Swift still managed a very respectable tenth place, while VW’s other Polo-badged hatch came in at 11th and was the last model out of the top 20 to crack 1,000 sales in March.
The Mahindra Pik Up, Hyundai Grand 10, Haval Jolion, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, VW T-Cross, Renault Kiger, Toyota Corolla Quest, Nissan Magnite, and Kia Sonet – in that order – then filled up the remaining nine positions.
