Affordable crossovers with the best warranties in South Africa

A good warranty can be one of the most important things to consider when buying a new car, bringing an assurance that the cost of unforeseen faults will be taken care of without leaving a crater-sized hole in your wallet.

However, warranties can be more difficult to compare than something like engine specs, with different carmakers all offering their own warranties with various time and distance criteria.

As a result, the best way to determine your ideal after-sales agreement is to look at how far you drive every month, as this will give an indication as to whether you should seek out a plan with a better distance or year guarantee.

Looking at the under-R400,000 crossover segment in South Africa, the Nissan Magnite has a 6-year/150,000km warranty, which translates to about 2,083km per month.

If you drive less than that, the Magnite offers the longest warranty of any affordable SUV in the country.

On the other hand, if you drive 3,000 or more kilometres every month, you may be better off with a 5-year/200,000km plan or, even better, something like the Kia Sonet’s 5-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Another two honourable mentions go to the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and Hyundai Venue, which come with a separate engine warranty in addition to a 5-year/150,000km vehicle plan.

The Hyundai gets a 7-year/200,000km engine guarantee, too, while the Chery comes with an impressive 10-year/1-million km assurance.
