South African motorists are required to renew their car licences annually, but the actual cost of doing so can vary depending on which service you use.
A recent analysis by MyBroadBand found that PayCity provides the cheapest car licence renewal service at a rate of R113.85 (R99 excluding VAT), which includes the cost of administrative and delivery fees.
However, PayCity does not offer its services in all provinces, as Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern Cape, and most of the Western Cape (with the exception of Cape Town) are not covered.
The cheapest provider with country-wide service is therefore the South African Post Office network, which charges an admin fee of R72 and a delivery fee of R75 for a total of R147.
The National Traffic Information System has the same admin rate of R72, but has a higher delivery cost of R99 for a combined fee of R199.
First National Bank (FNB) and Spar also offer renewal services and have the exact same cost of R199. FNB’s cost includes deliveries but its coverage only extends to the metros of Gauteng and Cape Town.
Spar is also the only provider without an online platform, requiring motorists to visit a supported store with their expired licence to request a renewal. Customers must then collect their new licence from the same branch when its ready.
Below is a summary of the cheapest locations South Africans can renew their car licences at, according to MyBroadBand.
