New Opel Corsa Lite vs Peugeot 208 Allure – Affordable hatchbacks with premium features

Opel has updated its popular Corsa range in South Africa with the return of the entry-level Lite, which now starts at R349,900.

As is common practice in the industry these days, the Corsa has a sister car in the form of the Peugeot 208, with the two step-siblings sharing the same architecture and are thus entirely defined by their looks and features.

Given that the Corsa Lite’s closest competitor, the 208 Allure, has a higher starting price of R379,900, we put together this comparison to see exactly what you can expect from these stylish hatches.

Features

Buyers of the Corsa and 208 can expect 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights (DRLs), a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, rear park distance control, hill assist, ABS, six airbags, and a 7-inch infotainment screen as standard.

Features exclusive to the Opel, meanwhile, include front electric windows, halogen DRLs, manual air conditioning, cloth seats, a 7-inch digital driver display, a Bluetooth sound system with four speakers, lane-keep assist, and front pedestrian detection.

As the more expensive car, the Peugeot naturally has a more elaborate list of items, such as LED DRLs, automatic climate control, a leather steering wheel and gearstick, all-round electric windows, artificial leather/cloth upholstery with a mint green stitchwork, keyless entry and start, a 180-degree reverse camera, six speakers, a wireless charger, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engine

The new Corsa Lite shares a 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol drivetrain with the manual Allure, resulting in a power cap of 77kW and 205Nm for both cars.

This means the front-wheel-drive hatchbacks can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 194km/h.

They also make use of the same six-speed manual gearbox, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 5.8l/100km.

Pricing

The new Opel Corsa 1.2T Lite has a South African starting price of R349,900.

This includes a 5-year/120,000km warranty and a 3-year/45,000km service plan.

The Peugeot 208 1.2T Allure has a local starting price of R379,900.

Each purchase comes with a 5-year/100,000km warranty and a 3-year/60,000km service plan.
