4×4 rivals to the new GWM Tank 300

The new GWM Tank 300 is launching in South Africa before the end of 2023 and the automaker confirmed that we can “expect” the SUV to retail between R685,900 and R851,900.

Only a handful of details about the Tank’s local specifications have been shared thus far, hinting that the ladder-frame SUV will be a capable off-roader with a lot to offer.

At launch, powertrain options for GWM’s new high-rider will comprise a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine generating 162kW and 387Nm combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, or a 1.5-litre, hybrid setup that generates 258kW and 615Nm and connects to a nine-speed auto-box.

The petrol model sports a part-time four-wheel-drive setup with 2H, 4H, and 4L settings, whereas the hybrid gets full-time four-wheel drive, and both variants support a maximum towing capacity of 3,000kg.

Completing the GWM’s off-road credentials is an approach angle of 33 degrees and a departure angle of 34 degrees, combined with 224mm of ground clearance, a maximum incline scaleability of 35 degrees, and water wading depth of 700mm.

As the name implies the Tank is quite a sizeable SUV, too, measuring 4,760mm in length, 1,930mm in width, and 1,903mm in height and weighing around 2.1 tonnes.

With its launch date still an undisclosed amount of time away, however, GWM has yet to announce its specifications nor the complete line-up.

As in markets such as Australia, we expect to see at least two derivatives of the SUV on sale with features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, a nine-speaker sound system, an electric driver seat, ambient lighting, automatic LED lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
