Cheapest places to renew your car licence online

South African motorists are expected to renew their vehicle licence discs every year, but there are multiple ways of doing so, and not all methods have the same cost.

It is possible to renew your licence in person by visiting an associated service provider, but this can often result in long queues and a lot of lost time.

These days, it’s far more common for citizens to renew their licence online, though the process can still be rather confusing as the quality of the service can vary depending on the provider used, and which province you are located in.

The cost of renewing a disc includes the cost of the licence itself, which will depend on the car, on top of an administrative fee which varies from service to service.

Most providers will also grant the option of having your disc delivered, which will incur an additional fee, though certain outlets bundle this with the administrative cost. Alternatively, a company may give you the option to collect your new licence from one of its branches.

Where to renew your licence disc

The cheapest platform in the country for renewing your car licence disc is PayCity, which charges R113.85 per renewal.

This includes admin and delivery fees, however, PayCity is not available in every province as it only operates in the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West, and the City of Cape Town, but not the rest of the Western Cape.

This means that the cheapest countrywide service is provided by the South African Post Office, which has been providing online renewals since January 2022.

The admin cost of a renewal is R72, while a delivery fee will tack on another R75 for a total of R147.

Natis is the next cheapest online renewal service and is also available across South Africa. It charges the same admin cost as the Post Office at R72, but has a higher delivery fee of R99, resulting in a combined cost of R171.

FNB also offers an online portal for car disc renewals which charges R199 for both the admin and delivery fees, but it is only available in the Gauteng and Cape Town metros.

Finally, Spar and Pick ‘n Pay both have licence services, though only PnP has an online platform.

The supermarket requires a payment of R250 for admin costs and R79.99 for delivery, making it the most expensive platform at a price of R329.99.

It also provides the service in every province except the Western Cape.
