Renewing your expired licence can be a headache in South Africa with driver’s licence testing centres (DLTCs) constantly being plagued by lacklustre service and system outages, and on a national scale, the one-and-only card printing machine continuously breaking down.
As such, booking and visiting a DLTC that is known for operating smoothly and efficiently could be worth the hassle.
According to customer complaints and compliments, the best branches to renew your licence in Gauteng are the Waterfall Park and Eco Park driver’s licence testing centres (DLTC) in Midrand and Centurion, respectively.
These “smart DLTCs” were launched in 2022 to assist the government in alleviating the backlog of licence renewals it experienced at the time, and they currently boast the highest ratings based on customer reviews of all the DLTCs in the province, both scoring 4.7 out of 5 stars.
At the other end of the spectrum, the older Vanderbijlpark DLTC ranked the lowest of the 43 locations on review at 2.3/5.
The three facilities were the major outliers between all the region’s DLTCs coming in either noticeably below or above the rest of the pack, with the other 40 centres sitting somewhere between 2.6 and 4.2.
The most prevalent rating was 3.3/5, with six (14%) of the DLTCs achieving this result.
For Gauteng residents, booking to renew their licence card can be done online via the Natis system, but it must be noted that not all locations are available to reserve on any given day.
On a Monday, all DLTCs open renewal slots, and on a Thursday, the system in the background will have slots available for “priority renewal” of cards, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
