How much insurance payments are on the new Mercedes-Benz GLC

South Africans looking to own the new Mercedes-Benz GLC can expect to pay roughly R3,200 or more for insurance every month, according to research done by TopAuto.

The luxury SUV recently went on sale in South Africa with prices ranging from R1,211,220 for the entry-level 220d Avantgarde, up to R1,492,787 for the range-topping 300d AMG Line.

Depending on the model, it is available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol or one of two turbo-diesel motors, all of which now come standard with 48V mild-hybrid technology. Each variant also features 4Matic all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The specifications of these drivetrains are detailed below:

  • 220d – 145kW/440Nm, 5.2-5.9l/100km
  • 300d – 198kW/550Nm, 5.5-6.1l/100km
  • 300 – 190kW/400Nm, 7.3-8.2l/100km

As for equipment, the Mercedes comes standard with automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a wireless charging pad, a reverse camera, electronically-adjustable and heated front seats, man-made Artico leather upholstery, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, lane-keep assist, active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, emergency brake assist, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11.9-inch infotainment screen with smartphone pairing.

The AMG Line variants have additional styling details in the form of 19-inch light alloy rims, a front apron with air intakes, a rear diffuser, and a star-patterned grille.

Insurance costs

We used Hippo’s car insurance quote tool to find out what the monthly premiums on the new Mercedes would be:

The calculations were based on an individual living in a metropolitan area like Johannesburg with no claims history who would be able to store their car in a locked garage at night.

Hippo was able to provide nine quotes for both the cheapest and most expensive GLC, which were as follows:

Insurer 220d monthly premiums 300d monthly premiums
King Price R3,188.71 R3,436.54
Budget R3,433.15 R3,583.14
Pineapple R3,525.23 R3,578.18
Iwyze R3,552.89 R3,534.62
Old Mutual R3,562.50 R3,572.64
Auto & General R3,645 R3,805.66
Dial Direct R3,645.38 R3,806.25
1st for Women R3,681.76 R3,844.06
Virseker R3,833.16 R4,004.29

Note that car insurance is heavily dependent on factors like your age, location, and claims history, meaning your premiums could be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances.

Hippo also provided the excess for each insurer, which are as follows:

Insurer Excess claim
Iwyze R5,850
Old Mutual R5,850
Pineapple R5,850
King Price R6,500
1st for Women R12,500
Auto & General R12,500
Dial Direct R12,500
Virseker R12,500
Budget R12,950

An excess is the amount that you are required to pay as a client when you are involved in a car accident and make a claim to your insurer.
