New BMW CE 02 – The electric motorbike that’s coming to South Africa

BMW has revealed its latest electric vehicle (EV) in the form of the new CE 02.

The Munich-based automaker describes the CE 02 as being “neither an e-scooter nor an e-motorcycle,” but rather an “eParkourer” intended for cities and urban areas.

The electric two-wheeler is scheduled for a South African introduction in the second quarter of 2024, with pricing to be confirmed at a later stage.

Electric mobility

Unlike BMW’s CE 04 electric scooter, which features smaller tyres for better efficiency, the 02 has a larger set of wheels for better performance across a wider variety of surface types.

On the base model, the frame and fenders have a black colour scheme, while the engine cover is finished in metallic grey and the remaining surfaces offer a mix of matte and high-gloss touches.

The Highline version, meanwhile, will offer a more extroverted appearance with a contrasting colour palette and an anodised gold finish on the front forks.

For performance, the eParkourer uses an 11kW motor that allows it to achieve a top speed of 95km/h and a 2kWh battery supplying a maximum range of 90km.

It comes standard with a 0.9kWh external charging cable which is compatible with household outlets, but is optionally available with a faster 1.5kW cable.

There are two driving modes – “Flow” and “Surf” – with the former offering an ideal setup for cruising in traffic while the latter is intended for a more dynamic experience.

A third “Flash” mode is an optional extra on the Highline and delivers the sportiest experience of the three modes, said BMW.

Information is then conveyed through a 3.5-inch TFT instrument cluster, and an accompanying USB-C port will allow users to charge their smartphones.

With the BMW Motorrad Connected app, owners will also be able to check the predicted end of charging distance via Bluetooth on their phones, and the Highline models even come with a smartphone holder that allows users to operate their devices on the move using a keypad on the handlebars.

Other features on the Ce 02 include a reversing assistant, keyless start, anti-theft alarm preparation, and LED headlights and daytime running lights.
