South Africans spent R270 million on new Ferraris in 2023 – Here’s what they bought

South Africans have bought a total of 31 Ferraris so far this year according to Naamsa’s vehicle sales statistics, racking up a combined bill of at least R270,746,555.

The Italian supercar brand is a rather exclusive club, as even the “cheapest” example sold in the country this year has a starting price of more than R5 million.

Seven different models have been purchased on the tip of Africa since January, with the most popular choice for affluent motorists being the hybrid 296 GTB, which has moved 9 units with a price of at least R6,804,200.

It wasn’t the most lucrative model for the prancing horse, however, as that title goes to the R15 million SF90, which sold 6 units.

Other sports cars purchased this year include the 296 GTS, the 812, F8, Portofina, and Roma.

However, it is difficult to say exactly how much money has been spent on Ferraris in South Africa for two reasons; firstly, the automaker only reports its model sales to Naamsa and not its individual derivatives, which can differ by margins of hundreds of thousands of rand, given the brand in question.

Second, Ferrari’s prestigious image within the motoring world means that anyone who has the money to afford one in the first place will, and is indeed expected to, pay more than the base price of the car on accessories in order to make every horse-badged car on the road truly unique.

With this in mind, it’s possible that well over R300 million has been spent on one supercar brand in this country so far this year.

Ferrari has plans to introduce two new vehicles in South Africa during the remainder of 2022, including the Roma Spider and the Purosangue, its first-ever SUV.
