Off-road enthusiasts looking to own the new limited-edition Toyota Hilux will need to spend at least R15,000 on monthly installments if they opt for a finance plan, according to a calculation by TopAuto.
The popular automaker has introduced a new model to its bakkie series in the form of the Raider X, which comes with all of the features found on the base vehicle while adding a host of exclusive cosmetic details, all for a starting price of R674,800 or R704,000, depending on the transmission selected.
This includes large matte-black wheel arch cladding with red inserts, black side steps, a matte-black styling bar, a chrome grille inset with Hilux badging, an integrated tonneau cover, 17-inch alloy wheels with a unique design, a rubberized load bay, “Raider X” badges on both the interior and exterior, and 10 different paint schemes.
Equipment on the 4×4 includes LED foglamps, automatic headlights, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, four speakers, USB and 12V sockets, a reverse camera, front and rear parking sensors, and an infotainment console with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Power is provided by a 2.4-litre, turbocharged diesel engine that provides 110kW and 400Nm, which pairs to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system.
It has an average fuel consumption of 7.7l/100km, can tow up to 3,500kg, and can store 830kg in the back. The bakkie also boasts a ground clearance of 286mm and a water wading depth of 700mm.
Each purchase includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000km service plan.
What you need to earn
We can use the following formula to work out the monthly payments on the new Hilux
- Car price – R674,800/R704,000,
- Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
- Interest – 11.75%
- Deposit – 0%
- Balloon – No balloon payment
- Extras – No optional extras
According to this, buyers will need to pay at least R14,925 per month to take home the Raider X, or up to R15,571 per month for the automatic.
Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.
This means you’ll need to earn R74,625 per month to afford the bakkie, and a slightly higher R77,855 per month if you want the auto.
Note that this figure does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which all need to be factored into your budget.
