First look at the new Peugeot Warrior in South Africa – Photos

Stellantis South Africa made a surprise announcement last week when it confirmed that the Peugeot Landtrek would be getting an upgrade, and that the public would be able to see it in person at this year’s Festival of Motoring in Midrand, Gauteng.

More than just a cosmetic update, the company revealed that the lion-badged bakkie would receive an extensive modification kit, adding unique accessories to its toolbox.

Dubbed the “Warrior” by its makers, the enhanced 4×4 was on display on the off-roading section of the car festival, where we managed to get a look at what Peugeot’s latest creation is all about.

The Warrior on show at the event was a one-off example, but customers will soon be able to purchase the Warrior kit to add to their own Landtreks.

This applies to both the rear-wheel drive Allure, which starts at R614,900, and the range-topping 4Action 4WD model, which has a sticker of R699,900.

The display model was poised right on the edge of a hill, which made for an excellent showcase of the new suspension with the left-rear tyre being almost entirely free of the wheel arch.

This revealed the bakkie’s specially-made Old Man Emu suspension kit, which raises ground clearance by a substantial 40mm to a substantial height of 275mm. For context, something like the high-performance Ranger Raptor, which also boasts an uprated suspension system has a clearance of 272mm.

The heightened stance is also helped out by a new set of beefy 18-inch Gripmax Mud Rage off-road tyres that use a carefully designed tread pattern to prevent mud, stones, and other debris from getting wedged in the rubber.

These additions will likely result in more aggressive approach and departure angles on the bakkie, which on the standard model sits at 27 and 29 degrees, respectively, as well as an improved water-wading depth, which by default is 600mm.

The other big addition that the Warrior label adds is a large bull bar that covers the entire front end of the vehicle, including its headlights and bumpers – a feature that is complemented at the back by a new “Wildog” rear bumper.

The festival model also showcased a set of black wheel arch molds, side steps, and a rear mounting rack with roof mounts.

Since it’s a modification kit, the Landtrek’s engine is unaffected, meaning you can expect a 1.9-litre, turbo-diesel powertrain with 110kW and 350Nm, which connects to a six-speed automatic shifter.

The rear-wheel-drive model has a fuel consumption of 8.9l/100km, while the heavier 4×4 has a slightly higher usage of 9.1l/100km. In either case, owners will be able to tow 3,000kg and store 1,000kg in the rear bed.

Standard equipment on the Peugeot includes rain-sensing wipers, automatic eco-LED headlights and daytime running lights, a 12V load-bed socket, front and rear mudguards, a refrigerated storage box, keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, electric front seats, cruise control, hill start and descent assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 180-degree reverse camera, lane-keep assist, and a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and four speakers.

The cost of the Warrior is roughly R120,000, though the finalized pricing will be confirmed closer to its release date.

As such, the most affordable Landtrek Warrior will have a window sticker of around R734,900, while the top-spec derivative comes in at R819,900.
