The salary you need to afford the new Suzuki XL6

South Africans wishing to get their hands on Suzuki’s new XL6 will need to earn at least R37,000 per month, according to a calculation by TopAuto.

The XL6 is a more upmarket version of the brand’s other people carrier – the Ertiga – with a price tag that ranges from R326,900 to R360,900.

It is powered by the same 1.5-litre petrol engine found in many of Suzuki’s vehicles, lending it a power rating of 77kW and 138Nm.

Furthermore, the six-seater can be had in either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic guise, and its fuel consumption works out to an average of 6.0l/100km.

On the base XL6, standard equipment takes the form of LED headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control with rear air vents, ventilated cupholders, cruise control, keyless entry and start, a reverse camera, a multifunction steering wheel, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and two second-row captain’s chairs with armrests.

It also comes with safety items comprising two airbags, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, and hill control (if the automatic is chosen).

If you’re looking for something more, the top-end GLX additionally provides a dual-tone paint scheme, synthetic leather upholstery, and automatic headlights.

What you need to earn

The following formula will allow us to calculate the monthly payments on the new Suzuki.

  • Car price – R326,900/R360,900
  • Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
  • Interest – 11.75%
  • Deposit – 0%
  • Balloon – No balloon payment
  • Extras – No optional extras

Based on this, motorists will have to commit at least R7,326 per month to pick up the XL6, and up to R8,078 per month for the range-topping GLX auto.

Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.

In other words, you will need to earn anywhere from R36,630 per month to R40,390 per month in order to afford Suzuki’s new MPV.

Note that this figure does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which all need to be factored into your budget.
