R200,000 hatchbacks competing against the new Hyundai Grand i10

Hyundai has launched the new Grand i10 in South Africa at a starting price of R234,500, making it the brand’s new entry-level vehicle following the discontinuation of the Atos.

The hatchback is available in two trim levels with a choice of two different engines, resulting in a total of five different models.

The first powertrain you can get is a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 49kW and 94Nm, which is exclusively mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, netting a fuel consumption return of 5.5l/100km.

If you want an automatic, you’ll have to upscale to the more powerful 1.2-litre powertrain, which has 61kW and 114Nm and can be paired to either the five-speed manual or a four-speed auto box.

While the manual 1.2-litre still has a consumption of 5.5l/100km, the automatic will raise this slightly to 5.9l/100km.

Standard equipment across the range comprises 14-inch steel wheels, cloth seats, electric side mirrors, manual air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel,  rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and an infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Opting for a higher-spec unit will then grant access to automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, 15-inch alloys, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and auto-folding side mirrors.
