Best and worst-selling bakkies in South Africa

The evergreen Toyota Hilux retained its status as the best-selling bakkie in South Africa this past September, being the only vehicle in its segment and, in fact, the country, that surpassed 3,000 sales.

As usual, the Ford Ranger assumed the second position by virtue of its 2,413 transactions, whereas third place was given to the Isuzu D-Max with 1,639 units of the bakkie finding a new owner.

Dipping below 1,000, the Nissan NP200 sat in fourth position at the end of September after selling 997 models, the Mahindra Pik Up in fifth at 578 models, and the GWM P-Series in sixth at 376 models.

Hot on the Chinese bakkie’s heels, Toyota’s rugged Land Cruiser 79 occupied the seventh spot thanks to 325 customers taking one home, and the Nissan Navara sat in eighth with 287 sales.

The VW Amarok was the last bakkie to reach the triple-digit mark as it sold 273 units lending it the ninth position, whereas the Mitsubishi Triton only just edged in at 10th with 80 sales, a mere four units above the GWM Steed in 11th.

JAC’s T-Series, which includes the T6 and T8 double cabs, sold a combined 59 examples for 12th place, though the automaker did not report how much each model achieved individually.

The Mahindra Bolero at 20 sales, Peugeot Landtrek at 12, Mazda BT-50 at six, and Jeep Gladiator at four then occupied the remainder of the best-sellers list up to the 16th spot.
