South African motorists are spoiled for choice these days, as there are more than 45 car brands currently operating within our borders.
A big reason for this enormous pool of vehicles is the relatively recent influx of Chinese automakers, who are rapidly expanding into new markets – South Africa being chief among them.
There are now eight Chinese carmakers on the tip of Africa, comprising BAIC, BYD, Chery, GWM, Haval, JAC, Omoda, and, most recently, Maxus Electric Vehicles – the local distributor of the Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC).
These nameplates have introduced models of all shapes and sizes to the country, with brands like BYD and GWM advancing the battery-electric scene bringing options like the Atto 3 and the soon-to-be-released Ora, while other manufacturers like JAC are helping to populate the affordable bakkie space.
Passenger brands like Haval and Chery have seen great success in South Africa, too, leading to the introduction of new subsidiaries like Omoda, one of Chery’s two luxury sub-divisions.
Chery’s other offshoot, the newly-formed Jaecoo, has also confirmed that it will make a local debut, and is slated to arrive in the first half of 2024.
