Prospective bakkie owners looking to own the new Mitsubishi Triton GLX in South Africa will need to commit at least R1,700 per month on insurance, according to a calculation by TopAuto.
The Japanese automaker recently launched a limited-edition version of its entry-level bakkie that adds a host of new equipment valued at R10,000, setting the cost to purchase at R529,990.
With this package, the double cab gains a Triton tailgate lock, a black Keko Sports bar, a tonneau cover, a low nudge bar, a double tube tow bar, and a Sony infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Bear in mind it still has equipment found on the ordinary Triton, too, such as 16-inch wheels, daytime running lights, side steps, automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, front and rear electric windows, electric side mirrors, ABS, and electronic brake-force distribution.
A 2.4-litre, turbocharged diesel engine is used to turn the rear wheels of the new GLX, providing 100kW and 324Nm via a six-speed manual gearbox.
This returns an average fuel consumption of 8.0l/100km, and achieves a maximum towing capacity of 1,400kg and payload of 1,000kg in the load bin.
Insurance costs
We used Hippo’s car insurance quote tool to find out what the monthly premiums on the new Mitsubishi would be.
The calculations were based on an individual living in a metropolitan area like Johannesburg with no claims history who would be able to store their car in a locked garage at night.
The site was able to provide nine quotes for the Triton GLX, which were as follows:
Insurer | Monthly payments |
---|---|
King Price | R1,685.25 |
Old Mutual | R1,986.33 |
Iwyze | R2,030.77 |
Pineapple | R2,041.92 |
Budget | R2,191.16 |
Auto & General | R2,300.32 |
1st for Women | R2,329.33 |
Dial Direct | R2,365.5 |
Virseker | R2,532.04 |
Note that car insurance is heavily dependent on factors like your age, location, and claims history, meaning your premiums could be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances and chosen excess.
Hippo also provided the excess for each insurer, which are as follows:
Insurer | Excess claim |
---|---|
Iwyze | R6,250 |
Old Mutual | R6,250 |
Pineapple | R6,250 |
King Price | R6,500 |
1st for Women | R11,600 |
Auto & General | R11,600 |
Dial Direct | R11,600 |
Virseker | R11,600 |
Budget | R11,900 |
An excess is the amount that you are required to pay as a client when you are involved in a car accident and make a claim to your insurer. The higher the excess you choose, the lower your monthly insurance payment generally is.
