How many R841,000 Toyota GR Corollas have been sold in South Africa in 5 months

Toyota has sold a total of 21 GR Corolla units since the vehicle was launched in South Africa in July this year.

The GR Corolla is the Japanese carmaker’s latest hot hatch, coming in two variations – Core and Circuit – with prices starting at R841,000 and R902,400, respectively.

You can see a breakdown of the hot hatchback’s sales in South Africa over the last five months, based on Naamsa’s sales data.

  • July – 7 units
  • August – 4 units
  • September – 3 units
  • October – 3 units
  • November – 4 units

This comes to a total of 21 units, meaning the company has made approximately R17.7 million from its angry Corolla in the five months since it appeared in showrooms.

A highly-anticipated hatch

It comes as little surprise that the GR Corolla has been a hit amongst motoring enthusiasts with the funds needed to purchase one, as it is the latest performance vehicle to be produced by the brand’s acclaimed Gazoo Racing (GR) sports division.

Following the success of the GR Yaris, the new hatchback boasts an uprated version of the same 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, letting it throw down a total of 221kW and 370Nm.

This power is transmitted to the track via a GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, which links to the powertrain via a six-speed manual gearbox.

All of this allows the Toyota to rocket from 0 to 100km/h in approximately 5.0 seconds and achieve a top speed of 230km/h.

A more intense powerplant isn’t all there is to it though, as handling plays a big part in the GR Corolla’s “fun to drive” persona.

In this regard, it’s kitted with sporty enhancements including new shock absorbers and coil springs, red aluminium brake calipers, and disc brakes that measure 356mm in the front and 297mm in the back.

It also has three driving modes for Eco, Normal, and Sport that can adjust the powertrain, suspension, and steering to suit the situation.

Equipment on the Corolla includes automatic LED headlights and daytime-running lights, 18-inch Enkei cast-alloy rims, heated bucket seats, leather and suede upholstery, aluminium pedals, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch driver display, and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
