The Toyota Hilux is officially South Africa’s best-selling bakkie, and by a huge margin – selling 37,382 units over the course of 2023.
The Japanese high-rider has had a terrific year with an almost uninterrupted stay in first place not just as the country’s favourite double cab, but also as its best car overall, beating out passenger models from all other brands.
As usual, the Hilux was followed by the Ford Ranger in second place with 24,618 units sold, and the Isuzu D-Max at 18,962 units, meaning that bakkies take up three spots in South Africa’s best-selling cars list overall.
The Nissan NP200 also had a great run in fourth place with 12,721 units, making it all the more surprising that this model will be discontinued in the near future.
Fifth place was then taken by Mahindra and its Pik Up range garnering 8,063 customers, allowing it to be the last vehicle to achieve more than 5,000 sales in 2023.
Also in the top 10 are the Nissan Navara, the GWM P-Series, the Toyota Land Cruiser 79, the VW Amarok, and the GWM Steed, all of which managed to sell roughly 100 units or more per month over the entirety of 2023.
Looking at the sector as a whole, light-commercial vehicles racked up 151,499 sales for the year-to-date as of December 2023 – an improvement of 11.6% compared to the year before.
Likewise, exports were another great story, as South Africa managed to send 140,061 models overseas, indicating an even greater 24.7% improvement over its 2022 numbers.
