Mercedes-Benz’s most affordable SUV – What you get for R900,000

Mercedes-Benz is one of South Africa’s most popular brands, with both the new and second-hand market seeing thousands of customers every year looking to get behind a steering wheel bearing the three-pointed star.

German car brands like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have long been known for their upmarket sedans, with Mercedes’s C-Class being a firm favourite for decades, but in recent times the popularity of sedans has begun to fade.

In its place, SUVs and crossovers have risen as the new vehicle body type of choice, not just for those seeking an alternative to bakkies, hatchbacks, or estates, but for all manner of brands from the mass-market to the elite, and Mercedes-Benz is no exception.

The Stuttgart-based automaker has dedicated more and more of its resources to its taller models over the last decade, with nameplates like the GLC solidifying themselves as a top pick amongst those who can match its price tag.

For those in South Africa who are interested in jumping on board with Mercedes as it ramps up its SUV catalogue, you’ll need to have a minimum of R922,085, as this is what it asks for its most affordable option in the country – the GLA200.

What you get

The GLA is driven by a 1.3-litre, turbocharged petrol engine which provides a total of 120kW and 250Nm, subsequently, the crossover can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 210km/h.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox, and the car features a 48V mild hybrid starter motor, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 6.0l/100km.

Standard exterior equipment then includes rain-sensing wipers, daytime running lights, and LED headlights with high-beam assist, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, it gets a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, push-button start, automatic climate control, a 7.0-inch digital driver display, Artico man-made leather/fabric upholstery, and a 10.25-inch MBUX infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety and assistance equipment comprises seven airbags, cruise control, hill assist, front and rear parking sensors, parking assist, and a reverse camera.

Each purchase includes a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and maintenance plan.
