Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo is off to a strong start in South Africa in 2024, taking its place as the best-selling hatchback of the first month of the year.

The Vivo sold 2,034 units in January, showing a small but appreciable improvement from its performance in previous months and putting it well ahead of most of the competition.

A much bigger jump was seen by the Suzuki Swift, however, which soared from 967 units in December to 1,566 units last month, overtaking the Toyota Starlet in the process to claim second place.

The Starlet still had a good month, mind you, as it went from 1,013 units to 1,479 units, comfortable earning it the last podium spot.

The VW Polo was then the last hatch to sell more than 1,000 models in January with 1,079 units, and the Hyundai Grand i10 rounded out the top five with 766 new customers.

Other models that made it into the top 10 include the likes of the Suzuki Baleno, the Toyota Vitz, the Suzuki S-Presso, the Hyundai i20, and the Renault Kwid.

In total, the 10 best-selling hatchbacks accounted for 9,340 separate purchases – nearly a quarter of the 41,636 vehicles sold in South Africa in January.
