The meteoric rise in demand for crossovers and SUVs, not only in South Africa but globally, has led to nearly each and every manufacturer on the market entering this segment.
While the distinction between the crossover and SUV is a grey area, to say the least, there are over 30 automakers in the country that sell either one body style or the other, or both.
The biggest volume mover in the segment is, of course, the Toyota Corolla Cross which saw 1,660 customers during January; while models like the Nissan Magnite and Kia Sonet also performed swimmingly each with over 500 transactions.
In terms of the premium brands, the Audi Q3 was a standout option for more affluent buyers garnering 103 buyers, as was the electric Volvo EX30 which saw 52 purchases.
Land Rover’s iconic Defender and breathtaking Range Rover Sport also had a great showing in the R1-million-plus category with the forming picking up 121 buyers and the latter 51.
Asian nameplates flew off the shelves, too, with the likes of the BAIC Beijing X55, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, and Haval Jolion each gaining hundreds of customers during the first month of the year.
