Best and worst-selling bakkies in South Africa

January was a solid month for bakkie sales in South Africa, with several models hitting similar or better figures than what they managed the month before.

As usual, the Toyota Hilux is sitting contently in first place with 2,645 units sold, though this is less than the 2,858 units it moved in the last month of 2023.

Its closest competitor, the Ford Ranger, also saw a miniscule month-on-month drop from 1,936 to 1,914 units but is nonetheless still performing near the top.

Isuzu, on the other hand, saw an appreciable uptick from 1,023 to 1,336 units, securing third place and making it the last bakkie to achieve more than 1,000 sales.

The Nissan NP200 still has a consistent track record in fourth with 969 units despite its impending cancellation, and Mahindra closed out the top five with 578 units sold.

Other models to make it into the top 10 include the GWM P-Series, the Nissan Navara, the VW Amarok, the Toyota Land Cruiser, and the GWM Steed.

Looking at the category as a whole, the light-commercial vehicle (LCV) sector accounted for 10,871 out of the 41,636 new cars bought in South Africa in January 2024, where the top five bakkies contributed 7,442 units of those LCV sales.
