The powerful technology driving the new BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV

The BYD Sealion 6 recently hit South Africa’s shores, bringing powerful new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technologies to the local market.
Underpinned by the latest intelligent features, the Sealion 6 offers superior performance and fuel economy, with next-level safety and convenience.
It combines this with an incredible 1,092-kilometre driving range, a premium luxury design, and affordable pricing – making it perfect for South Africans.
This impressive range is thanks to the Sealion 6’s large battery, which gives it incredible fuel efficiency without compromising on performance.
All of these features are managed by BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode intelligence) Electric Hybrid System, which we explain below.
What drives the BYD Sealion 6
The Sealion 6 features a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid engine and a DM-i dedicated blade battery that provide it with exceptional fuel efficiency at 4.8 litres per 100km.
The Blade Battery is custom-built for this hybrid platform, providing 18.3 kWh of power and an 80km electric-only range.
This configuration and its exceptional efficiency provide the Sealion 6 with its excellent 1,092km total range when combining electric-powered and fuel-powered driving.
At the heart of the Sealion 6’s drivetrain is the BYD Super DM technology, which is what separates the Sealion 6 from other PHEVs.
Super DM hybrid architecture uses a high-power motor and large capacity battery as its primary power source, and intelligently switches to the 1.5-litre engine when the state of charge (SOC) is low.
For example, for maximum efficiency, it drives in fully electric mode when the battery is fully charged, and as the SOC depletes, it engages the combustion engine, transforming into a super-fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle.
The result is next-level efficiency and a smaller environmental footprint while maintaining exceptional performance.
In fact, the Sealion 6 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a rapid 5.9 seconds.
This performance doesn’t come at the cost of ride comfort, either. The DM-I architecture includes a double layer of sound insulation and heat insulation in the front to ensure maximum comfort on your commute.
Furthermore, power is driven to the wheels using the EHS rather than a conventional gearbox, providing a seamless gear-shifting experience in the form of an e-CVT.
The luxuries
BYD has equipped the Sealion 6 with extensive assistance features, such as the DiPilot Driving Assistance System (DiDAS).
DiDAS is an intelligent driving system that provides drivers with a 360-degree view of their vehicle for easy parking, as well as the following:
- Front/Rear Crossing Traffic Alert
- Front/Rear Crossing Traffic Brake
- Front/Rear Collision Warning
- Intelligent Cruise Control – Combination of Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centring Control
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Detection
- Lane Departure Warning
- Emergency Lane Keep Assist
- Lane Changing Assist
- Hazard Mitigation Assist
These features provide a comfortable, luxurious driving experience further enhanced by extensive cabin luxuries, such as a panoramic sunroof, a vehicle-to-load function, dual-zone aircon, and a 10-speaker Infinity audio system.
