Repairing your car is more affordable than ever before in South Africa
The cost of living in South Africa has risen steeply, which is leading cash-strapped consumers to stop maintaining their vehicles.
This is according to Kate Elliott, the CEO of Right to Repair, who said this is resulting in more unsafe cars on South African roads.
Right to Repair is a South African non-profit organisation that advocates for consumer choice when it comes to the sourcing and installation of spare parts.
The organisation was founded to help customers save money and time when maintaining their vehicles.
Competition Commission guidelines
Right to Repair received great news in July 2021 when the Competition Commission implemented new guidelines that allow consumers to use non-original spare parts in their vehicles.
This has resulted in more part availability, which has increased healthy competition between automotive brands in the country.
“The guidelines should bring down the price of services and raise the level of service provided, because the industry is now governed by normal market forces where competition is able to thrive,” said Elliott.
“Since these guidelines came into effect in the South African automotive aftermarket, we have already seen a general opening up of the market, providing motorists with the freedom to shop around and find the most competitive service provider.”
“We are also seeing better quality service being provided and a general slowing down in the inflation of service prices,” said Elliott.
