New 1,200km Chery hybrid SUV goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features

The new Chery Tiggo 7 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) has finally gone on sale in South Africa.

The Tiggo 7 is the second Chery hybrid to make its debut this week alongside the new Tiggo Cross CHS.

While the Tiggo Cross is a traditional hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the Tiggo 7 is a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) with the capacity for full-electric driving.

It is also the most affordable model of its kind, as the Tiggo 7 CSH starts at R619,900.

This makes it R20,000 cheaper than the previous entry-level PHEV, the R639,900 BYD Sealion 6, which launched two months ago.

Additionally, Chery is running an introductory promotion on the Tiggo 7 for the next three months, temporarily lowering its sticker to R599,900.

Engine

The CSH makes use of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is paired with an electric motor and a 18.3kWh battery.

The result is a combined output of 265kW and 310Nm, making it the most powerful option in the Tiggo 7 stable by a wide margin.

In comparison, the base SUV generates 108kW and 210Nm, while the higher-end Max units produce 145kW and 290Nm.

The 18.3kWh battery gives the CSH an electric range of 93km, which contributes towards a total range of 1,200km.

Owners can recharge the battery using an AC cable, which will take between four and eight hours.

Alternatively, you can use a DC fast charger, which will top up the cells in less than an hour.

The SUV is front-wheel-drive and uses a dedicated hybrid transmission, leading to an average fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km.

Features

The PHEV is sold in two specifications – Plus and Ultra – both of which are fitted with automatic LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

There are seven colours to choose from, including two dual-tone options with a black roof:

  • Khaki White
  • Phantom Grey
  • New Tech Grey
  • New Vanilla White
  • NASDAQ Silver Carbon Black
  • Khaki White & New Carbon Black
  • Bloodstone Red & New Carbon Black

The Plus comes standard with keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, a six-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat, a leather multifunction steering wheel, a 50W wireless charging pad, dual-zone climate control, and six speakers.

There are two 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard for the instrument cluster and infotainment systems, the latter of which supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice commands.

In terms of assistance features, the Plus is fitted with cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors, and a 540-degree camera system.

Upgrading to the Ultra will then add a driver’s seat with memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, an anti-dazzle rearview mirror, an air purification system, ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker Sony stereo.

It also has an expanded driver aid suite with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping, high-beam control, traffic congestion assist, and lane change assist.
