New limited-edition Mercedes-AMG goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing

Mercedes-Benz has just launched the new AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic Edition 1 in South Africa.

The Edition 1 is the latest model to come from the brand’s coveted AMG division, offering an advanced powertrain with incredible performance.

The E53 is a limited-production model, which means that only a few units have been allocated to different countries around the world.

Luckily, Mercedes has managed to secure 12 units of the exclusive new AMG, but you’ll have to be in the 1% to afford one.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 Edition 1 has a starting price of R3,228,200, which includes a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.

Top of the class

The centerpiece of the new AMG is a 3.0-litre, inline, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is assisted by a 120kW electric motor.

Together, these powertrains give the E53 an incredible output of 450kW and 750Nm, allowing it to rocket from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, provided you use the Race Start launch control setting.

All of this power is transmitted to the tarmac via the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which benefits from rear-axle steering for better traction and agility.

It also helps to reduce the vehicle’s turning circle, making it easier to park on a day to day basis.

What’s more, the new Mercedes is a plug-in hybrid, as the e-motor is hooked up to a 28.6kWh battery.

The battery is large enough to afford an electric driving range of 100km, more than enough for most trips around town.

The sports car supports both 11kW AC and 60kW DC charging speeds, the latter of which can top up the cells from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes.

As you’d expect, the AMG also comes with a variety of driving modes, which includes settings for Electric, Battery Hold, and Sport+ to make the most of the hybrid powerplant.

Each of the 12 special-edition models is finished in a MANUFAKTUR Alpine Grey solid coat, and the sports seats have a contrasting yellow topstitching pattern.

Furthermore, the Edition 1 comes with a set of AMG forged alloy wheels, the AMG Night Package, the AMG Exterior Carbon Package, and the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, all of which add unique cosmetics to the design.

A few examples of this include an illuminated AMG-specific grille, a sport diffuser, and round quad tailpipes.

The brand’s MBUX display has been upgraded to a supercreen that covers the entire dashboard, including the front passenger side.

The instrument cluster records the users race data to provide real-time performance updates, keeping tabs on important details like the hybrid system’s energy distrubution.

Buyers can then customize their purchase with a number of optional extras, such as AMG high-performance compound brakes, AMG Ride Control suspension, 21-inch alloy rims, and an AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.
