New Mazda CX-5 unveiled – And its coming to South Africa

Mazda has unveiled its third-generation CX-5 crossover SUV globally – and it will be coming to South Africa next year.

The CX-5 was first introduced in 2012 and has become Mazda’s best-selling car, being sold in over 100 countries and regions worldwide and selling over 4.5 million units.

According to Mazda, this new version of the vehicle features improvements to its interior, ride comfort, and quietness.

The new CX-5 also enjoys enlarged proportions without losing the typical style of the previous CX-5 models.

This includes increases to the vehicle’s length, width, height, and wheelbase of 115mm, 15mm, 20mm, and 115mm respectively.

It also boasts more boot space, with this number increasing by 61L to reach 500L when the rear seats are raised, and the doors also open almost 90-degrees – both of which are advantageous in a family SUV.

Mazda has also made significant changes to the interior of the new CX-5 model.

The vehicle now enjoys a simpler design philosophy, including a large central display in alignment with a more modern design approach.

On the highest trim, this display is a massive 15.6 inches, while on lower trims, it will still be a large 12.6-inch panel.

Neither version comes with physical dials, but do include native Google Maps and Gemini – Google’s AI assistant.

It also has a new height-adjustable steering wheel and an updated 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster to track your speed, revs, and more.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the initial European specification model comes with an e-SKYACTIV G 2.5L petrol engine as standard.

This version also comes with Mazda’s mild hybrid system, Mazda M Hybrid.

However, in other markets, such as Australia, it comes with a normally-aspirated version of the e-SKYACIVE G 2.5L engine that delivers 132kW power and 242Nm torque.

Both versions feature a SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission, and incorporate the MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension.

They boast evolved Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), too, with the goal of “creating a car that allows all occupants to enjoy driving in safety, security, and comfort.”

Details about the version that will be available in South Africa are not yet available – but Mazda has confirmed that this updated model will arrive in South Africa in 2026.

Pricing will also be made available closer to the time.
