More affordable GWM P300 bakkie launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

GWM has expanded the P300 bakkie series in South Africa with a new entry-level LS specification.

As a reminded, the P300 is a thoroughly updated of the brand’s popular P-Series, which was launched in South Africa back in February.

Since release, the Chinese pickup has been available in three specifications with prices starting at R599,900.

However, the carmaker has now added the LS grade in both rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations, lowering the vehicle’s starting price in the process.

The P300 LS begins at R529,900, reflecting a R70,000 reduction from the previous base model.

Engine

The LS is equipped with the same 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine as the rest of the P300 series.

This is the same powertrain found on the GWM’s flagship bakkie – the P500 – meaning the P300 effectively splits the difference in terms of performance and cost between the P-Series and the P500.

Owners have access to 135kW and 480Nm, which can be sent to either the rear or all four wheels, depending on the model.

Both versions have a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and the 4WD units additionally feature an electronic rear differential lock.

Fuel consumption works out to 8.2l/100km, giving the bakkie a range of 1,054km on its 78-litre tank.

The load bed can take 1,050kg, though the towing capacity varies depending on the wheel configuration.

The RWD units can tow 3,000kg, while the 4WD models can haul up to 3,500kg.

Features

The LS may be the entry-level trim, but that doesn’t mean its light on features.

Visually, the bakkie sports a large grille, automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, flared wheel arches, and a set of 18-inch alloy wheels with silver brake calipers.

It also comes with fixed side steps, roof rails, a chassis guard, an electronic-lock tailgate, and a full-size steel spare wheel.

Looking at the rest of the package, the P300 offers keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, an aviator-style gear selector, a sunglasses holder, automatic air conditioning, leatherette upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats.

Additionally, it has a wireless charging pad, front and rear USB ports, six speakers, a 7-inch digital driver display, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with voice commands, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Safety and driving assistance functions include ABS, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, driver attention alert, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera.
