New special-edition Toyota Hilux goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

The new Toyota Hilux Legend 55 has finally gone on sale in South Africa.

The Legend 55 is a new special-edition model for the fan-favourite bakkie series, which made its public debut at the company’s State of the Motoring Industry event back in January.

It is now available on the company’s website in both Xtra Cab (extended cab) and double cab body styles with prices starting at R728,300 and R885,700, respectively.

The bakkie is also sold in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, meaning there are four different versions to choose from.

Engine

The Hilux is equipped with the brand’s familiar 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel (2.8GD-6) engine, developing a total of 150kW and 500Nm.

Unfortunately, this means the 55 does not benefit from the uprated performance seen on the GR-Sport, which puts out 165kW and 550Nm.

It’s also worth noting that the special-edition model does not feature the 48V mild hybrid technology found on other units in the Legend series.

All versions of the Toyota are fitted with a six-speed automatic gearbox, which links to either the rear or all four wheels, depending on the model.

Fuel consumption then works out to around 8.0l/100km.

The bakkie is also certified to tow up to 3,500kg, and haul 775kg in the rear tray.

Features

The “55” in the new model’s name is a reference to the fact that Toyota has been in South Africa for 55 years.

The Legend 55 is, therefore, a commemorative unit to mark the brand’s achievements in our market, which means its decked out with a number of exclusive details.

This includes a new sports bar, tow bar, a rubberised load bay, an underbody bashplate, and a lockable roller shutter.

Naturally, it has bespoke “Legend 55” badges on the doors and tailgate, and Toyota has gone one step further by adding puddle lamps in the doors that display a Legend 55 graphic on the floor whenever the doors are opened.

The bakkie also has a 55th anniversary plaque in the centre console, and model branding on the scuff plates and front seat headrests.

It has LED headlights, side steps, 18-inch alloy rims wrapped in AT tyres, mud flaps, and flared black wheel arches that merge with the fog lamp surrounds at the front.

Interestingly, the new Hilux appears to use the standard body type when the model previewed earlier this year used a widebody format similar to the GR-Sport.

In any case, the pickup has all of the trimmings found on the other Legend units, meaning it comes with keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, a JBL stereo, an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
