New Tata Tiago launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Tata has finally revealed the pricing for its new selection of passenger cars, starting with the Tiago hatchback.

The Indian automaker relaunched in South Africa last month, though it has opted to keep the pricing of new cars under lock and key, until now.

The new Tiago – a small hatchback that will serve as the entry point to the brand – is now available in three specifications with prices starting at R184,900.

A fourth range-topping model called the XZ will be added at a later date.

This makes it the third cheapest car in the country after the Toyota Vitz and Suzuki S-Presso, which cost R178,800 and R178,900, respectively.

Engine

The Tiago runs on a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine, which sends 63kW and 113Nm down to the front wheels.

The base XM is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the XT has the option of a five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT).

Fuel consumption works out to a rather frugal 5.0l/100km regardless of the transmission used.

Features

The small hatchback measures 3,767mm in length, 1,537mm in height, and 1,940mm in width, with a boot that can take up to 242 litres of luggage.

The XM comes standard with 14-inch steel wheels with covers, a contrast roof, electric windows, manual air conditioning, fabric seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, a USB port, a 3.5-inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, two speakers, ABS, corner stability control, two airbags, central locking, an immobiliser, and rear parking sensors.

The mid-range XT units have a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth, four speakers, electronic stability control, hill assist, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The top-spec XZ, which has yet to be launched, will then add 15-inch alloy rims, electric folding side mirrors, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, LED daytime running lights, fog lamps, a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, a one-touch electric driver’s window, a cooled glovebox, and a 45W USB Type C charging port.

The Tiago scored a 4-star Global NCAP safety rating in 2020.

Pricing

The South African pricing for the new Tata Tiago is as follows:

  • Tata Tiago 1.2 XM MT – R184,900
  • Tata Tiago 1.2 XT MT – R209,900
  • Tata Tiago 1.2 XT AMT – R224,900

This includes a 5-year/125,000km warranty and a 2-year/30,000km service plan.
