New VW Amarok in South Africa – Pricing revealed

VW has finally revealed the pricing for the long-awaited petrol version of the Amarok bakkie.

The petrol model has been in the pipeline for quite some time, as it was first announced for our market back in early 2024.

The company initially said that we would get our hands on it in the second half of that year, only to put out a statement in October that the vehicle had been indefinitely delayed.

Fast forward to August 2025, and the new Amarok was once again confirmed for a local release, with the model even making an appearance at the Festival of Motoring in Gauteng.

Long story short, the petrol Amarok is almost here, and the automaker has revealed that it will cost R1,099,000, making it the third most expensive model in the series.

Engine

The star of the show is a new 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, offering something different to the turbo-diesel (TDI) plants the Amarok has been exclusively bundled with until now.

It generates a total of 222kW and 452Nm, which is transmitted to the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system via a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

This gives the bakkie a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds, which is quite brisk compared to most pickups.

It’s obviously not in the same league as the high-performance Ford Ranger Raptor, but it does mean that the petrol version is the fastest Amarok on the market.

Of course, the trade-off with the petrol engine is its fuel consumption, which averages out to 9.9l/100km.

For comparison, the 2.0-litre Bi-TDI consumes around 7.5l/100km.

Features

The petrol engine is exclusively sold with the range-topping PanAmericana trim level, which means it has a rather generous spec sheet.

If the model previewed at the Festival of Motoring is an indication of the final product, buyers can expect IQ Light Matrix LED headlights, 18-inch “Amadora” alloy rims with all-season tyres, a tubular styling bar, side steps, roof rails, underbody protection, and a rear diff lock.

It also comes with a leather multifunction steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat, “Cricket” leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, a 12-inch digital driver display, and a 12-inch portrait infotainment screen.

Additionally, the double cab has adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver-fatigue detection, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and Park Assist.
