Volvo has announced that a new car will make its debut in 2026, and that it is coming to South Africa.
The Swedish carmaker recently dropped a teaser for the brand-new EX60, which will split the difference between the EX30 and XC40 crossovers and the much larger EX90 SUV.
“The premium midsize SUV will debut on 21 January 2026, promising longer range, cutting-edge technology, and a pivotal role in Volvo’s electrification journey,” said the company.
The EX60 is the brand’s first midsize SUV to be built on its new electric platform, which Volvo claims will deliver a longer range than its previous products.
It is scheduled to be built at Volvo’s Torslanda factory, located in Gothenburg in the carmaker’s home country of Sweden, with production to kick off in the first half of 2026.
South Africa won’t have to wait much longer than other markets, either, as Volvo’s local division confirmed that the EX60 will go on sale here in the mid-to-late third quarter next year.
A mystery SUV

For now, the EX60 has been relegated to a single teaser image of the car’s silhouette, though it’s not hard to imagine what the final product will look like.
From the image of the SUV’s side profile, we can clearly see that it uses the same T-shaped LED headlights as the EX30 and EX90, which already look very similar to one another, barring the size difference.
It’s a similar story with the EX60, which appears to have exactly the same body shape as its siblings.
It is clear that Volvo has settled on a design for its current generation of electric vehicles, so it’s fair to assume that the EX60’s appearance won’t be radically different from what we’ve already seen.
Likewise, the interior will almost certainly be similar to its peers, with a clean, minimalist design with an uncluttered dashboard.
The SUV should feature a large portrait infotainment screen in the centre, and a small digital driver display behind the steering wheel.
In terms of size, the EX60 should be similar to the XC60, which is 4,688mm long, 1,902mm wide, and 1,658mm tall.
One aspect we know nothing about is the new car’s powertrain, which will only be confirmed when the EX60 makes its international debut on 21 January 2026.
If we use Volvo’s other vehicles as a point of reference, the EX60 should be offered in both Single Motor and Twin Motor configurations with multiple battery sizes.
As a benchmark, the EX30 Cross Country has a pair of electric motors that generate a combined 315kW and 543Nm.
It also has a 69kWh battery with a manufacturer-claimed range of 427km.
The entry-level EX60 will probably be less powerful than this, especially if its a Single Motor, but it still gives a rough idea of the powertrains Volvo uses on its cars nowadays.
Something that is a bit easier to guess at is the SUV’s pricing, which should be more expensive than the EX30, but cheaper than the EX90.
In South Africa, the EX30 starts at R835,500 while the EX90 goes for R2,650,000, so we imagine the newcomer will start somewhere between R1 million and R1.5 million.
“The upcoming EX60 signals the next chapter in Volvo’s journey toward becoming a fully electric brand,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa.
“As South Africa’s EV landscape continues to expand—with more charging points, growing awareness, and an appetite for premium electrification—the EX60 will arrive at the perfect time.”
“It’s designed to bring our latest technology to a broader audience while delivering the range, confidence and everyday practicality that local drivers expect.”
