The pricing for the new Leapmotor C10 has been revealed ahead of its imminent launch in South Africa.
Leapmotor is a new Chinese car brand specializing in new-energy vehicles (NEVs), which is set to debut in our market before the month’s end.
One thing that sets Leapmotor apart from other Chinese marques is that it is affiliated with Stellantis, the company responsible for several other brands such as Alfa Romeo, Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, and Jeep.
Consequently, the new automaker will make use of the Stellantis dealership network once it goes on sale in South Africa.
Its first product will be the C10, an SUV with a a range extender electric vehicle (REEV) powertrain.
According to our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, the C10 will be made available in two specifications with prices starting at R759,900.
Powertrain

Motorists will likely be familiar with the terms HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), and BEV (battery electric vehicle), but the new C10 REEV works quite differently from all these other options.
Like a plug-in, REEVs have both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, but only the latter powers the wheels.
In the C10’s case, an e-motor is mounted over the rear axle, which generates 158kW and 320Nm.
The e-motor gets its juice from a 28.4kWh lithium-ion battery, which affords an electric driving range of 145km.
The catch is that the C10 also has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which acts as a generator to replenish the battery, giving it a much longer total range of 970km.
This is the main selling point of a REEV, as it functions as a BEV for the most part, but with a range far greater than what you would typically get with just a large battery.
Of course, you need to top up the petrol ‘generator,’ but the engine achieves a very economical 5.5l/100km.
Owners can also charge the battery directly via a 6.6kWh onboard charger, which will replenish the cells in roughly 5 hours.
If you use a 65kW DC fast charger, you can achieve an 80% charge in around 30 minutes.
Features

The C10 will be sold in two trim levels in South Africa – the Style and the Design.
Starting with the Style, buyers can look forward to automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto-folding side mirrors, keyless entry and start, artificial leather upholstery, electric front seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and a 14.6-inch floating infotainment screen.
Upgrading to the Design will then add a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, an electric tailgate, and a 12-speaker stereo.
The Leapmotor also comes with driving assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, tyre pressure monitoring, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera.
