Changan is set to launch in South Africa any day now with a lineup of four new products, comprising a sedan, two SUVs, and a bakkie.
The Chinese carmaker has begun to update its local website, and we’ve uncovered the pricing for its first vehicle, the Alsvin sedan.
The Alsvin will serve as the entry point to the brand, coming in two specifications with prices starting at R238,000.
This makes it the third-cheapest sedan in the country after the R209,900 Proton Saga and the R224,900 Suzuki DZire.
Engine
Interestingly, the two versions of the Alsvin are offered with different engines.
The base model, called the CS, is fitted with a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol block that generates 74kW and 135Nm.
This option is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and achieves an average fuel consumption of 5.8l/100km.
The other grade, the CE, benefits from a slightly more potent 1.5-litre mill with 78kW and 145Nm.
Surprisingly, this version features a five-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is rare to see at this price point, where most self-shifters use an automated manual transmission or a CVT.
The trade-off is fuel consumption, as the CE consumes 6.9l/100km.
Features
Changan has already published the brochure for its new sedan, so we know exactly what’s included with each trim level.
The CS comes standard with 15-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, electric windows, central locking, a multifunction steering wheel, cloth and leather upholstery, a central armrest with a storage box, manual air conditioning, four speakers, 2 USB ports, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth.
It also has ABS, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera.
Upgrading to the CE will add cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, a powered sunroof, and automatic headlights.

The South African pricing for the new Changan Alsvin is as follows:

- Changan Alsvin 1.5 CE 5DCT – R271,200
The company’s website lists a 5-year/150,000km warranty, but its currently unknown whether this includes a service plan as well.
