New 1,000km Changan Hunter REEV bakkie launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

The Changan Hunter Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) is officially on sale in South Africa.

After months of waiting, Changan has finally debuted in our market with four new vehicles, one of which is the Hunter double cab.

The Hunter is available in three specifications, the first two of which use a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

The flagship REEV, on the other hand, takes things in an entirely new direction with a first-of-its-kind powertrain that uses both an internal combustion engine and two electric motor.

Performance

The new Hunter is the first REEV bakkie in South Africa, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a pair of electric motors (one over each axle).

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the engine does not power the wheels directly; instead, it functions as a generator to charge a 31.2kWh battery which, in turn, powers the e-motors.

This unusual setup gives the Changan a respectable output of 200kW and 470Nm, and the 31.2kWh battery means it has an all-electric range of 145km.

However, when the “generator” is used, the range goes all the way up to 1,000km.

You’ll still have to fill up the engine’s 70-litre fuel tank like a normal car, but the advantage of this setup is that you are essentially driving an electric vehicle (EV) with the range of a petrol model.

There’s also a separate port that lets you charge the battery directly, effectively allowing users to treat the Hunter as an EV for all their daily trips.

As for its other stats, the bakkie is 5,330mm long, 1,930mm wide, and 1,875mm tall, with a wheelbase measuring 3,180mm long.

It has 226mm of ground clearance, four-wheel-drive, and a central diff lock.

The towing capacity clocks in at 2,200kg, and it can haul 1,000kg in the rear bed.

Notably, the REEV also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, meaning owners can use the battery to charge external equipment.

Features

As the flagship of the Hunter series, the REEV has a rather generous spec sheet that starts with automatic LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, a front tow hook, a unique “Mechanical Armor” front grille, rain-sensing wipers, chrome door handles, aluminium side steps, roof rails, and 18-inch alloy rims.

Looking at the cabin, the list continues with keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel, two-tone artificial leather upholstery, an electric driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, automatic air conditioning, four speakers, USB ports, a 7.5-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

On top of this, the double cab has assistance functions comprising traction control, hill start and descent control, emergency braking assist, electronic stability control, trailer sway control, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, lane-departure warning, parking sensors, and a 540-degree camera system.
