New Geely E5 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

The Chinese carmaker Geely has finally made its debut in South Africa.

Its initial lineup consists of two SUVs, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) E5 EM-i and the battery-electric (BEV) E5.

We’ve already covered the E5 EM-i, so it’s time to turn our attention to its all-electric sibling.

The E5 is available in two specifications – the Aspire and Apex – and prices start at R699,999.

These two SUVs are only the beginning of Geely’s plans for our market, mind you, as the manufacturer will introduce its Zeekr, Farizon, and Riddara sub-brands in the near future.

Powertrain

Both the Aspire and Apex make use of a front-mounted e-motor with 160kW and 320Nm, letting the SUV sprint to 100km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Thanks to a 60.22kWh battery, the Aspire has a driving range of 430km, though the heavier Apex can only manage 410km.

It supports 11kW AC chargers, which will replenish the cells to 100% in just over six hours.

Alternatively, you can use a 100kW DC outlet that can recharge the battery from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

Features

The E5 measures 4,615mm in length, 1,901mm in width, and 1,670mm in height, putting it in the same class as midsize SUVs like the Ford Territory or Haval H6.

Equipment starts with all-around LED lights, roof rails, 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat, automatic air conditioning, ventilated front seats, six speakers, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay.

Additionally, it has ABS, hill assist, cruise control, parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera with a chassis view.

The Apex will throw in a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch alloys, intelligent high beams, 256-colour ambient lighting, massage seats, a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot detection, emergency lane-keep assist, and lane-change assist.

The South African pricing for the Geely E5 is as follows:

Geely E5 Aspire – R699,999
Geely E5 Apex – R759,999

This includes a 6-year/150,000km warranty, a 6-year/120,000km service plan, a 5-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance plan, and an 8-year/200,000km battery warranty.
