New Chinese bakkie lands in South Africa – Pricing and features
LDV has announced that the first shipment of the all-new Terron 9 has arrived in South Africa.
The Terron 9 is a new double cab that is positioned as the flagship of the Chinese carmaker’s bakkie range, slotting above the midsize T60.
The pickup will soon be stock in dealerships nationwide, available in two specifications with prices starting at R779,900.
The Terron 9 will also be joined by a new SUV called the D90, which will be LDV’s first passenger car in South Africa.
Performance
The Terron is equipped with a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which generates a considerable 164kW and 520Nm.
To put that in perspective, these are the outputs for three of South Africa’s most popular high-end bakkies:
- GWM P500 2.4T Luxury 4×4 – 135kW/480Nm
- Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 4×4 Legend – 150kW/500Nm
- Ford Ranger 3.0TD V6 Wildtrak 4WD – 184kW/600Nm
The LDV will be sold in two specifications – Premium and Flagship – both of which feature a four-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a low-range transfer case.
As a result, the bakkie manages an average fuel consumption of 7.9l/100km, giving it a range of 1,013km on its 80-litre tank.
The Terron 9 also comes with a front and rear diff lock, three driving modes for Normal, Eco, and Sport, and terrain settings for Mud, Snow, Sand, Tow, Rock, Deep Snow, Deep Mud, and Rock Crawl.
It is 5,500mm long, 2,265mm wide, and 1,874mm tall, making it one of the largest bakkies in the country.
The wheelbase is 3,300mm long, and it has 220mm of ground clearance and a water-wading depth of 550mm.
It has an approach angle of 29 degrees, a break-over angle of 20 degrees, and a departure angle of 25 degrees.
The LDV can tow 3,500kg, and it can load 850kg in the rear tray.
One unique selling point of the Terron 9 is that it has an openable rear panel – a market-first feature for South Africa – granting direct access between the cabin and the load bin.
“The response to the Terron 9 has been phenomenal. It’s going to make a bold statement in the market,” said Neil Barker, COO of LDV South Africa.
“With this exciting new feature – a first for South Africa – the Terron 9 is more than a bakkie. This is The Future, Unleashed.”
