Big change for the Toyota Corolla in South Africa

Toyota has trimmed the Corolla hatchback and sedan lineup in South Africa to just two units.

The automaker explained that the changes are part of a planned “rationalization” meant to align the vehicle with evolving market demands.

“Effective immediately, both the Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Sedan will be offered in a single, high-specification derivative: the 1.8-litre Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) XR grade,” it said.

“As part of this transition, the XS HEV derivatives and XR 2.0-litre internal combustion engine (ICE) models have been discontinued.”

Toyota noted that the move reflects declining demand for traditional sedans and hatchbacks, while demand for new-energy vehicles continues to grow.

Prices for the revised Toyota Corolla roster now start at R584,400.

Powertrain

The hybrid Corolla is fitted with a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is assisted by a small electric motor and battery.

The result is a combined output of 103kW, though Toyota doesn’t list the official torque stat for its hybrids, listing the Corolla’s as 142+e.

A CVT transmission send power down to the front wheels, leading to a very economical fuel consumption of 4.0l/100km.

Features

The Corolla is available as both a hatchback and sedan in a single XR trim level.

Both body types come standard with automatic bi-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and start, leather and suede upholstery, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, six speakers, a wireless charger, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It has has safety and driving aids in the form of adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot detection, lane trace assist, hill control, a rearview camera, and seven airbags.
