The first batch of South Africa’s newest Chinese SUV has made it onto our shores, as 500 Lepas L4 models landed at the Durban Car Terminal last week.
Lepas is the latest premium offering by the Chinese giant Chery, expanding its local portfolio even further.
General Manager of Lepas South Africa, Jay Jay Botes, and Country Director at Lepas, Luke Cao, took delivery of the vehicles.
“This was a proud and exciting moment for us. Seeing the first L4s driven off the vessel and onto our roads made everything feel real,” said Botes.
“The L4 combines intelligent technology, strong performance, and unmistakable design. We are bringing something truly special to South African drivers.”
Cao added that South Africa is a very important market for Lepas.
“Being here to mark this arrival reflects our commitment to the region. We are not just launching a vehicle; we are establishing a brand with a clear vision, premium product, and strong local support network.”
The arrival of the first L4 models signals Lepas’ fully operational, established local dealer network.
This batch will be distributed to major dealerships and regional centres across South Africa.
Lepas promises a robust after-sales network at launch, which it said was built on the service expertise of its parent company, Chery.
“Customers can expect reliable support, ready availability of parts, and a seamless service experience throughout their ownership journey,” the brand announced.
It added that with the first L4 units on the ground, prepared dealers, and after-sales support fully in place, Lepas has moved from promise to reality.
“The brand is ready to deliver intelligent, elegant, and exciting mobility to South African drivers.”
South Africa’s newest car brand

The L4 is built on Chery’s brand-new advanced LEX platform, which the brand designed to integrate intelligent architecture, safety, and performance.
Its large frame measures 4,406mm long and 1,820mm wide, with a 2,700mm wheelbase, aimed at offering drivers a balanced ride, precise handling, and a solid, safe foundation on 17-inch alloy wheels.
From the outset, Lepas has talked about the distinct styling of the L4, boasting its “sculpted exterior, bold front profile, and flowing lines that convey movement even when standing still”.
In terms of performance, the L4 has been fitted with Chery’s naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, capable of producing 108kW and 225Nm.
A six-speed dual-clutch transmission sends this power to the SUV’s front wheels.
Inside, drivers can expect leather seats, a multi-function steering wheel, and an 8-inch driver’s segment display cluster.
A 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system adorns the centre of the dashboard, while a wireless charger offers added convenience.
More information on the Lepas L4, such as its pricing and model selection, will be announced at launch.
