New Toyota GR Corolla launched in South Africa – Pricing and features
Toyota has officially launched the new GR Corolla automatic in South Africa.
The hot hatch has been with us since July 2023, but up till now it has only been available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
This roster has finally been expanded with the introduction of a new eight-speed automatic, giving petrolheads the choice of their preferred transmission.
“Developed to enhance drivability, cooling performance and everyday usability, the new 8-speed automatic variant broadens the GR Corolla’s appeal while preserving the sharp dynamics of its GR-Four all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged powertrain,” said the company.
Performance
The GR Corolla is Toyota’s flagship hatchback in South Africa, offering the full might of its Gazoo Racing division.
Under the hood is a 1.6-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which generates an impressive 210kW and 400Nm.
Regardless of whether you opt for the six-speed manual or the new eight-speed auto, power is transmitted to all four corners via the brand’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive system.
This allows the hot hatch to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a blistering 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 230km/h.
As you’d expect from Toyota’s racing division, the Corolla’s performance attributes go well beyond its engine.
It has three selectable driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – which affect the GR-tuned suspension and triple-exist exhaust system.
It also has a mechanical handbrake for added control, and rebound springs on the front and rear shock absorbers to reduce inner wheel lift during aggressive driving.
The automatic version also has a new air-cooled transmission fluid cooler with an additional sub-radiator behind the front vents, and a new cool-air duct above the brakes.
Toyota has also added new Torsen limited-slip differentials across the range to optimise traction.
Features

Toyota has replaced the Corolla’s chrome cabin finishes with GR gun metal accents across the isntrument panel, centre console, seat detailing, and gearknob.
Usability has been improved with the relocation of the iMT switch to the front of the shifter, grouping key driving controls within easy reach.
All models have been given an upgraded, integrated audio system with active noise control, and the range now comes standard with a reverse camera and blind spot monitoring with safe exit assist.
This is in addition to the equipment already included on the hatchback, such as automatic LED headlights and daytime-running lights, 18-inch cast-alloy rims, heated bucket seats, leather and suede upholstery, aluminium pedals, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, a digital driver display, and a large infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
