New Chinese SUV coming to South Africa very soon

Chinese automaker Changan has announced the imminent local launch of its all-new Uni-S mid-size SUV.

The Uni-S will have its work cut out for it in South Africa’s most hotly contested segment, a challenge the brand says it is willing to take on.

“This is exactly where the Changan Uni-S is choosing to compete,” Changan declared.

“It enters the segment not as an alternative, but as the strongest contender of 2026. This is not about offering “good enough for the price”, it is about completely challenging expectations of what buyers should expect at this level – and then delivering on that.”

While pricing is yet to be announced, the carmaker confirmed that the Uni-S will be locally available in three derivatives from next month.

What to expect

In a bid to position the SUV among the most capable models in its class, Changan has fitted the Uni-S with the same “Blue Whale” powertrain found in the CS75 Pro.

The award-winning 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor will likely be married to the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission found in Changan’s existing SUV line-up.

This configuration produces 138kW and 300Nm, driving the front wheels and achieving a 7.5l/100km fuel consumption. It remains to be seen if this is the case in the upcoming Uni-S.

Featuring a multi-link independent rear suspension, the Uni-S offers drivers enhanced stability and ride composure.

Its suite of driver and passenger conveniences includes a panoramic sunroof that closes automatically when rain is sensed, and side mirrors that tilt downward for better reversing visibility.

Joining these are an electric tailgate, a mobile phone Bluetooth key, and an infotainment system that includes a 12.8-inch display and eight speakers.

Adding to the convenience is a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, front and rear collision warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic parking and a 540-degree panoramic camera system.

Further specifications and prices will become available closer to the launch of the Uni-S.
