New Lexus SUV on the cards for South Africa – What to expect

Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus has unveiled a new fully electric three-row SUV, the TZ, that it says is currently under study for possible introduction to the South African market.

According to the luxury brand, the TZ introduces a new “Discover Limitless” design philosophy, which it says is built around Lexus’s “Driving Lounge” concept.

Lexus noted that this concept aims to combine the brand’s driving refinement with a spacious and comfortable cabin designed to keep passengers relaxed and connected.

Takeshi Miyaura, Lexus International Chief Engineer, explained that the all-electric TZ was created to deliver more than just mobility.

“The TZ was developed as a refined mobile space that brings smiles to drivers and families alike. Beyond driving, we wanted to create a vehicle where people genuinely enjoy spending time,” he said.

While not yet confirmed for South Africa, Lexus has released more information about the European specification models.

What to expect

As the SUV that introduces Lexus’s new design direction, the TZ features a sculpted spindle body, with geometric lighting elements, and aerodynamic detailing.

The carmaker noted that this not only establishes its new philosophy, but also achieves class-leading aerodynamic performance that improves efficiency and driving range.

This new aerodynamic body is built on a 5,100mm dedicated battery-electric (BEV) platform, featuring an expansive 3,050mm wheelbase, which combine to create the spacious interior Lexus is aiming for.

Inside, the SUV features a panoramic roof and minimalist design, as well as a “Forged Bamboo” trim crafted from Shikoku bamboo, recycled aluminium and other sustainable materials.

Its long frame and wheelbase also enable three rows of seating and vast cargo carrying space, ranging from 290 litres to 2,017 litres.

Lexus noted that the TZ’s interior delivers some of the highest levels of cabin quietness in its line-up, while advanced sound management, ambient lighting, and premium audio technology create a sensory-rich environment.

The SUV features driving modes which aim to improve both passenger comfort and driver engagement, including “Rear Comfort” mode and Interactive Manual Drive.

Despite the brand’s focus on creating a luxury three-row SUV, Lexus ensured that the TZ has all-electric power to match.

As a result, it is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system capable of producing 300kW, allowing for a brisk 5.4-second 0-100km/h acceleration time.

This power enables a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg, though this is true of the European specification, and it remains to be seen what Lexus does locally, should the model be announced for South Africa.

The TZ achieves an estimated driving range of up to 640km, depending on market specifications, and features rapid DC charging, achieving a 10% to 80% charge in around 35 minutes

Lexus noted that further details regarding the SUV’s introduction window and pricing will be communicated should it be confirmed for the local market.
